Exploring Koprivshtitsa

When you arrive in the beautiful town of Koprivshtitsa you will immediately feel as if you have been taken back in time. This historic town has wonderfully preserved the atmosphere and characteristics of 19th Century Bulgaria.

It’s situated on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains, 111kms east of Sofia.

Here you will be able to visit the homes of Todor Kableshkov and Georgi Benkovski, two of the men who organised the April 1876 uprising against the Ottoman Empire eventually leading to victory and freedom for Bulgaria.

To get the most from your visit here you should stay over night in one of the many lovely guest houses. We tried out Guest House Stela and you will find modern and comfortable facilities but all set in a beautiful traditional surrounding.

You can enjoy walking along the cobbled streets and visiting the museums and monuments during the day, a ticket for entry to all museums is 5 leva (2.50 EUR). You can learn more about all the museums and opening times here. Don’t forget to stop for lunch, take lots of photographs (you may have to pay extra to take photos inside the museums) and of course buy plenty of souvenirs! In the evening, you can take part in some traditional Bulgarian dancing while enjoying a delicious meal with some Rakia! The food is very good and the prices are reasonable.

Let us know if you enjoyed exploring Koprivshtitsa as much as we did!
