Brexit is probably one of the most used words of this century. There hasn’t been a day gone by in the last 12 months that I haven’t read it, said it or heard it!
For Brits living in Bulgaria, it is a confusing time. There have been so many unanswered questions and many of us have been left feeling somewhat frustrated by all the ‘unknowns’.
I have been following the British Embassy in Bulgaria page on Facebook which I have found to be quite helpful, you can follow them at: https://www.facebook.com/UKinBulgaria/
At the moment I am in the process of changing my British driving licence to a Bulgarian one. In actual fact, this is something that every British person who has lived in Bulgaria for more than 6 months should have done anyway, regardless of Brexit! The process itself isn’t too complicated for a regular driving license (for HGV licence you should check the additional requirements). You require a medical certificate stating you are fit to drive, this is available from almost every GP for a cost of around 25 leva. You also need to take a declaration stating that you live in Bulgaria and do not hold a driving licence in any other EU state (which should be signed in person at KAT). Along with this, take your originals and two photocopies (front and back) of your Bulgarian ID card and your British Licence. You will be required to complete a form at KAT so you may need to have a Bulgarian speaker with you if you are unsure you can do this on your own. Once you have all of this, you must go to your local KAT office, get a ticket and expect to wait about 2-3 hours for your turn! The British Embassy have shared a video about this process which you may also find helpful: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=227884108166029
We will keep you posted on any more news we hear that we think is helpful!
